White Christmas May Only Be Dream

TIM ROHWER, Staff Writer

It looks like people in Council Bluffs and southwest Iowa will only be dreaming of a white Christmas.

The chances of it really happening look slim, said a spokeswoman for the National Weather Service in Valley, Neb.

"We're not looking at any storm systems coming through," said forecaster Becky Griffis on Saturday. "Tomorrow (Sunday) will be the coldest day in a while. We'll see temperatures begin to warm up by the holiday weekend, starting Thursday, Friday and Saturday."

According to her forecast, today's high temperature should reach around 18 degrees with an overnight low of 5 degrees.

The warmer weather will begin appearing on Monday with highs in the upper 20s as warm air comes in from the Southwest, Griffis said.

Toward the end of the week, the high temperatures will reach into the low 40s, she said, with sunny to partly cloudy skies throughout the week.

The best chance for Council Bluffs to have a white Christmas apparently occurred Saturday evening as a strong storm swept through northern portions of Kansas and Missouri with up to six inches of snow predicted between Kansas City and St. Joseph, Mo.

The Council Bluffs area was expected to receive an inch or less.

The long-range forecast beyond the Christmas weekend calls for temperature slightly above normal, Griffis said.

As far as moisture, she said, "We don't have clear signals."There's an equal chance that the moisture could be normal, above normal or below normal, she said.
